October 11, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC, October 11, 2017 - Healthcare Ready today announced the appointment of Bruce Altevogt, PhD, as board chair. Altevogt brings decades of expertise and involvement in health policy and healthcare preparedness and response.

“Dr. Altevogt's extensive experience and work in both preparedness and broader health policy offers an invaluable perspective to our organization,” said executive director Nicolette Louissaint, PhD. “His knowledge will be instrumental as Healthcare Ready continues its work to build resilience across all communities and coordinate efforts to meet the health needs of those struck by disaster.”

Altevogt is a senior director of science policy and science advocacy within Pfizer Inc.’s Global Policy and International Public Affairs. In this role Altevogt is responsible for managing policy issues in support of Pfizer’s research and development enterprise and global health security initiatives, including anti-microbial resistance and vaccine preparedness.

"After the devastating 2017 hurricane season, it's reminds us how critically important public-private partnerships are in disaster response and recovery, and I am proud to take on this role, as we continue to build on Healthcare Ready’s important work," said Altevogt.

Prior to joining Pfizer Inc., Altevogt spent more than a decade as a senior program officer on the Board on Health Sciences Policy at the Institute of Medicine (IOM), now known as The Health and Medicine Division. While at the IOM, he worked on policy issues related to preparedness, response, and recovery for catastrophic events, and served as director of the Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Catastrophic Events.

Altevogt received a doctorate from Harvard University’s Program in Neuroscience, and a B.A. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he majored in Biology and minored in South Asian Studies. He is a published author of multiple scientific articles and reports.

In addition, Healthcare Ready recently announced the promotion of Sarah Baker to programs manager. In this role, Sarah will spearhead Healthcare Ready's preparedness and response initiatives.
